VOICE PROJECTION GAME

CROSSING THE RIVER

INTRODUCTION

This activity started as a fix for avoiding having to use faulty microphones in school plays. I also realised that the students couldn't act well with a microphone in their hand. One of the reasons I do school plays is because I see how effective they are at giving children confidence in themselves and for battling shyness and so for the same reasons, learning to project their voices becomes a great skill to develop.

WARM-UP
1. Breathing

(Everyone stands in their own space)

INSTRUCTOR

OK, let's do some tactical breathing.

First put one hand on your chest and

one hand on your tummy.

We are going to breath with our tummies

and not our chests.

Now we are going to inhale for 4 seconds,

hold our breath for 4 seconds,

breath out for 4 seconds

and hold for 4 seconds.

Right. Let's go.

Inhale. One two three four

Hold. One two three four.

Breath out. One two three four.

Hold. One two three four.

And again.

2. Pitch

1. Laugh!
It will be fake but it doesn't matter.
2. Humming
Purse your lips and drop your jaw. Tap your back and front while you hum.
3. Head Resonance
To get this going you need to do that annoying children's taunting melody Nyah nyah nyah nyah nyah which sounds quite similar to Ring a-ring o' roses.
4. Articulation

1.

Fee-fi-fo-fum,

I smell the blood of an Englishman,

Be he alive, or be he dead

I'll grind his bones to make my bread

2. Read the capitals repeatedly
  Q.E., Q.R., Q.E., Q.R.
VOICE PROJECTION GAME - CROSSING THE RIVER

What you need
1. A big space like a school hall or outside
2. Coloured slalom cones or coloured cardboard circles
3. Question cards (provided below) - when you know the game well, you can make up questionss on the fly.
Instructions
1. Each team sits at one end of the hall.
2. 1 member from each team goes to the red square.
3. The referee hands the question card, which is on the smart phone or written on a card or whatever, and the student has one chance only to read the question to their team.
4. If the team answers correctly, the asker moves to the blue cone and the turn goes to the next team.
5. If the team answer incorrectly either because they got the wrong answer or didn't hear the question, the turn goes to the next team.
6. Each team must get the right answer to their question before moving to the next colour no matter how many turns it takes!
7. With every correct answer the member moves further away from their team and so needs to project their voice accordly.
8. When one member crosses the river, so the next one moves to the red cone.
9. When there is only one team member left, anyone from the team on the other bank, must shout out a red question, then a blue one etc until they are safely across.
