The Science of Reading

Extensive research over many decades, especially the work of Dr Alice Sullivan and Professor Stephen Krashen, has proven the amazing impact reading aloud with children has on children's futures.

These studies show that children who are read to by their parents have a high probability of leading happy and prosperous lives, independently of their parents' incomes. We also now know that children who enjoy stories become readers for pleasure when they are nine years old. These same children, who read for pleasure, do better than their classmates at secondary school including, most curiously, in mathematics.

So, parents and teachers, please find the time to enjoy reading aloud together with your children and students because you will be doing them a massive favour.

The mission of this website is to promote stories that children and adults can read together. I am an English teacher in Spain and every year I write simple plays based on fairy and folk tales from around the world. I am now converting these texts into stories for reading aloud.
