VOLUNTEER LANGUAGE ASSISTANT PROGRAM AND GUIDE

Introduction

This program trains assistants in learning techniques based on educational psychology, cognitive neuroscience and meta-analyses. They work with teams of 5 children and their main tasks are: building their team; building friendship and building the natural use of the target language.

Set-up
CLASS SIZE: 15 split into 3 groups of 5
ASSISTANTS: 1-3 per group
LOCATION: a large space such as the school hall or gym or even outside!
TIME: minimum 2 session of 45 minutes a week.
MATERIALS: 17-20 chairs arranged in a horse-shoe shape or u.
OTHER POSSIBLE MATERIALS:
Overhead projector with wifi Bean bags
A keyboard or guitar A singing bowl
Coloured cones  
Basic components of program
1. The program works on 4 key areas:
 
1. Emergent language 3. Confidence-building
2. Target language 4. Emotional intelligence
2. Classes are like sports training sessions because they are action-packed and  the children are learning a range of complex skills which need lots of practice and repetition.
Teaching skills acquired by language assistants.
1. Whole brain teaching drills applied to language acquisition
2. Reading aloud and story-telling skills
3. Role-play and discussion skills
4. Team-building skills
5. Language games, warm-ups and drama games
6. Motivational skills
7. Emotional intelligence development in young learners
Generic class structure
1. WARM-UP (whole class)~5 mins
  Whole Brain Learning, language games, songs, drama warm-ups, voice projection exercises, sentence building
2. TARGET LANGUAGE (whole class)~5 mins
  Songs, quizzes, spelling games, the hotseat
3. EMERGENT LANGUAGE (whole class) ~10 mins
  Story-telling, acting out stories, role-plays
4. TEAM-BUILDING (in teams) ~10 mins
  conversation, role-play preparation
5. PERFORMANCE (whole class) ~10 mins
  teams perform their prepared role-plays in front of the class or share the main points of their conversations with the rest of the class.
6. WARM-DOWN (whole class) ~5 mins
  musical statues or freeze or another fun activity or game.
TOTAL TIME: 45 mins
