The stories in the Storytime Together series are designed to bridge the gap between being read to and independent reading. The new reader mostly listens but also participates and so starts to see that they can read aloud too. The text in green is for the new readers to read. I have used CSS grid to make the ebook comfortable to read on tablets and smartphones.
I hope old readers and new enjoy this story.
The Three Billy Goats Gruff is a fairy tale from Norway and shows us that by thinking on our feet and working together, we can overcome difficult and scary challenges. Encourage children to ask questions and ask them about what they think might happen next. This way, children soon love stories and will grow into avid readers. Research shows that children who read for pleasure, go on to do better both at school and at life.
Once upon a time, there were three goats and they were brothers. These goats were called the Three Billy Goats Gruff or, to their friends, The 3 B.G.G.s. In a squeaky voice, the first billy goat Gruff said, “ Look! We have nothing to eat and I’m hungry.”
“Me too,” said the second billy goat Gruff.
In a deep voice, the third billy goat Gruff said, “Let’s cross the river. The grass is greener on the other side.”
In a scared voice, B.G.G. Number 1 said, “We can’t cross the river. The troll will eat us.”
“Listen,” said B.G.G Number 2, “I’ve got a plan.”
Soon, the three Billy Goats Gruff arrived at the bridge and they could see the green grass on the other side.
In a squeaky and brave voice, B.G.G. Number 1 said, “ I will cross the bridge first.”
“Trip trap trip trap,” went the sound of the hooves on the bridge.
In a scary voice, the troll said, “Who is crossing my bridge?”
“It’s me, the first billy goat Gruff,” said the first billy goat Gruff.
“Stop goat! I want to eat you,” growled the troll.
“Don’t eat me. Eat my brother. He is fat,” said the first billy goat Gruff.
“OK. You can pass,” growled the troll.
And so the first goat crossed the bridge, waved to his brothers and began eating grass.
“Trip trap trip trap,” went the sound of the hooves on the bridge.
In a scary voice, the troll said, “Who is crossing my bridge?”
“It’s me, the second billy goat Gruff,” said the second billy goat Gruff.
“Stop goat! I want to eat you,” growled the troll.
“Don’t eat me. Eat my brother. He is fat,” said the second billy goat Gruff.
“OK. You can pass,” growled the troll.
And so the second goat crossed the bridge, waved to his brothers and began eating grass.
“Trip trap trip trap,” went the sound of the hooves on the bridge.
In a scary voice, the troll said, “Who is crossing my bridge?”
“It’s me, the third billy goat Gruff,” said the third billy goat Gruff.
“Stop goat! I want to eat you,” growled the troll.
“No. I want to eat you!” said the third billy goat Gruff.
And so the third goat charged at the troll.
The troll was so scared that he jumped into the river and swam away and was never seen again.
The third billy goat Gruff then crossed the bridge, joined his brothers and they… What?
all lived happily ever after.
